Distraction.gov -- Not

Yes, Distraction.gov is a real Web site. No, it isn't a compilation of crossword puzzles, Sporcle quizzes and Gawker-worthy gossip. In fact, it has nothing to do with giving feds a little diversion at work.

Distraction.gov is the government's official distracted driving portal, maintained by the Transportation Department, devoted to educating the public about the dangers of multitasking behind the wheel. The site aggregates news related to texting bans, outlines state and local regulations, provides definitions and statistics about distracted driving--80 percent of all crashes and 65 percent of near crashes involve some type of distraction, for example--and updates users on national initiatives.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood recently has been proactive about pushing legislation and guidance to reduce distracted driving. In January he announced a federal ban on texting for commercial drivers and last month unveiled sample legislation to help states form their own texting regulations.
