Michigan has now taken the lead in the race to get driverless cars on the road. Gov. Rick Snyder recently signed a bill allowing the operation and eventual sale of self-driving vehicles in the state.

Nevada and California have previously authorized testing of autonomous cars, but the Michigan law will go a step further and will allow self-driving cars to hit the road without a person behind the steering wheel.

Auto industry leaders from General Motors, Chrysler and Ford helped draft the bill.
