Video: Visit the Bottom of the Ocean with Virtual Reality

Schmidt Ocean Institute

What's the best way to explore deep-sea vents? It's a high -emperature, high-pressure environment where no humans can go. For researchers at the Schmidt Ocean Institute, the answer is virtual reality.

In March, a team deployed remotely operated robots 3,600 feet deep off the coast of Samoa. For 150 hours, the robots shot 360-degree video.

That video, plugged into a virtual reality system, allowed SOI scientists to get a close and personal look at the inhospitable and largely unexplored area.

The robots also scanned the area to create a 3-D map of the terrain for further exploration.
