The test sled nearly broke the speed of sound.

Imagine traveling from Los Angeles to San Francisco in only half an hour. Elon Musk's dream of high-speed, energy-efficient travel came one step closer to reality yesterday.

Hyperloop One, one of two private companies developing a so-called hyperloop, used electric propulsion to send a motorized sled down a half-mile track at 700 miles per hour for 5 seconds in the Las Vegas desert.

Competing company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies will be conducting its own tests later this year.

Don't expect a ticket to ride anytime soon, however. The technology likely won't be a reality until 2021.
