The RS-25 rocket engine will one day hopefully help get us to Mars.

NASA's journey to the Red Planet will be a long one. But what will help get the space agency to Mars is the Space Launch System's RS-25 rocket engines.

This engine model has been used before -- in the space shuttle -- but the RS-25 is so effective, according to NASA, it will be providing the SLS, "more lift to orbit than any current launch vehicle."

The RS-25 still needs to be tested, however. NASA has been conducting tests of the engine at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, with the most recent test Aug. 13.
