Army wants next-level computing
A request for information from the Army Research Laboratory focuses on improving the service's computing power.
WHAT: An Army Research Laboratory request for information for technical capabilities related to high-performance computing.
WHY: Advanced computing is always evolving, and the Army is trying to keep pace. ARL wants to make sure its computing directorate "is able to produce cutting-edge research, novel solutions for Army-centric challenges, and fully support the wide variety of projects and programs" that constitute the directorate's mission.
The command, control, communications, computers, combat systems, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities sought by ARL could be applied at any point from research and development to fielded products.
ARL is looking for industry help in the lab's work with a Defense Department supercomputing center, among other programs. The lab also wants to hear from contractors that are well versed in hardening wide-area networks and able to support the Defense Department's vast unclassified and classified networks.
The RFI also targets software-defined networking, an IT architecture that has become a priority for defense officials. ARL is looking for companies that could improve SDN security and performance and support an SDN research project that would create a clearinghouse specific to ARL.
