Health IT: Agency pilots medical image-sharing technology

A federal agency is launching a pilot project to set up a network for medical digital image sharing.

The program is being done in collaboration with imaging specialists, scientists, engineers, informatics specialists, firms and academic institutions, the institute said. Interested vendors must show experience with sharing image data systems and electronic health records.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute today published a notice that it is will start a pilot project to develop an Internet-based network for sharing digital medical images.

The institute released a Sources Source notice on the Federal Business Opportunities Web site to identify qualified small businesses that could design and deploy the network. On the basis of the responses, the institute said it may issue a request for proposals.

The technical documents and source code for the network will belong to the government, the notice states.
