FCW Insider: Navy CIO blogs about the transition
In a recent blog post, Navy CIO Rob Carey provides an interesting take on IT and the upcoming presidential transition.
His first point is that Navy employees cannot afford to shift into neutral, despite the upcoming change in leadership.
"I am already hearing people express their 'what ifs' and 'I'll bets,'" Carey writes. "While the temptation to change focus earlier than is needed is great, our focus must remain on delivery of a continuous flow of assured information to the warfighters aboard ships and ashore serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, if we are working on the right tasks, they will stand the test of new leadership."
But Carey also makes an interesting point about the role of IT in helping with the transition.
The key concept is transparency (something we've heard a lot about this year, including during the presidential campaign). Technology makes it possible to prepare electronic reviews that give transition team members a transparent view of departments and agencies, Carey says.
"Collaboration sites, such as wikis, offer a place to collect an agency’s pertinent information," Carey writes. "This information can then be made available (in a controlled way) to a broad audience, which affords a smoother and faster transition."
