On the FBI’s most wanted list: Forensic bomb experts

The agency plans to issue a solicitation soon.

The FBI will be issuing a call for forensic experts that can analyze explosive devices planted in Afghanistan, a presolicitation states.

The agency’s effort would support the Quantico, Va.-based Terrorist Explosive Device Analytical Center, which was created to investigate what the military calls improvised explosive device threats in Iraq and Afghanistan. The unit, which comprises officials from the Defense Department, intelligence community and international agencies, examines and exploits IEDs to better understand terrorists’ tactics.

Contractors would be required to inventory all forensic materials, examine DNA traces on the devices, and study their explosives chemistry.

The contract will be for one year with options for one-year approvals. The total contract could span up to five years, the solicitation reads.
