2.4 Million Carphone Customers Potentially Hacked

Technology // UK

Officials at Carphone Warehouse, a British mobile phone retailer, described the cyber assault as "sophisticated", adding it was stopped "straight away" after the company itself discovered the attack.

The incident became public about three days after the company discovered the intrusion.

Carphone said it aims to contact all customers affected by the hack. The individuals might have had their names, addresses and dates of birth compromised.

Encrypted banking data of up to 90,000 of those customers may also have been accessed.

A letter sent to customers of one Carphone division has recommended they alert banks and credit card companies that they have been affected by the hack, allowing them to monitor accounts for unusual activity.
