Army National Guard Personnel Data Was Inadvertently Compromised

Government (U.S.) // United States

During a security incident different than the one affecting 21.5 million government employee and family member files, the personal information of Guard members was breached.

All current and former Army National Guard members since 2004 could be affected by the newly-disclosed situation. Records containing sensitive data were transferred to an insecure data center by a contractor, by mistake.

The data compromised includes names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and home addresses.

A military spokesman said: "We do not believe the data will be used unlawfully,” adding, "this was not a hacking incident, in which the intent was to use data for financial gain."

In disclosing the matter on July 10, 2015, the Defense Department did not state when the breach occurred or when it was discovered.
