A compromise of the bank’s debit and credit card systems might have exposed card and linked account numbers, cardholder names and expiration dates.

The incident apparently is limited to HSBC Turkey and the company said affected clients are at no financial risk.

Criminals will not have the capability to rack up fraudulent transactions using the pilfered credentials, at ATMs, online or by phone.

In an FAQ [PDF] posted on its website, HSBC officials stated that customer savings and current accounts are safe.

The information that criminals may have stolen is “is regularly shared by our customers with the 3rd parties when they make money transfers and EFT transactions,” officials added. “We cannot speculate on the intent of the attackers. We are confident that there is no financial risk to our customers and there has been no evidence of any fraud or other suspicious activity arising from this incident.”
