Syrian hacktivists usurp Israeli army’s tweets, spread rumors of nuclear leak

The potentially volatile message on the IDF’s Twitter feed was quickly removed, as tensions soared on a day when scores of Gaza rockets pounded the region, although none hit the nuclear research facility located deep in the Negev.

The false tweet warned of a "Possible nuclear leak in the region after 2 rockets hit Dimona nuclear facility.”

The pro-Assad Syrian Electronic Army hacker group claimed responsibility for the breach.

Following the incident, the real IDF apologized on Twitter for the incorrect tweets, vowing to “combat terror on all fronts including the cyber dimension.”

SEA took to Twitter again, posting its claim along with a screen shot of the fraudulent tweet on its own feed. 

The group also posted a screenshot of the IDF account’s backend to substantiate its claims about cracking the account’s password, according to the Boston Globe.
