How data transparency saved money in Los Angeles.

Ron Galperin is the city controller for Los Angeles. He ran for office because he was passionate about knowing more about L.A.'s finances.

Galperin was on an open data mission from the beginning.

"I really believe in making data-driven decisions, and that you will make better decisions when you have all the information, all the facts, in front of you," Galperin said.

In less than three months and a surprisingly low dollar amount, Galperin opened up the city's budgets to the public.
