Former Cyber Chief Takes to the Stage

Ever wonder what federal officials do once they retire from government? In the case of Greg Garcia, the DHS cyber chief appointed by Bush, he takes to the stage.

Ever wonder what federal officials do once they retire from government? In the case of Greg Garcia, the DHS cyber chief appointed by Bush, he takes to the stage.

Garcia is currently performing as Captain Mike in the Colonial Players production of "Wonder of the World," which The Annapolis Capital newspaper described as "a preposterous drama/comedy - a barrel of laughs of the adult kind." The review described Garcia's portrayal of Captain Mike as the "appropriate deadpan that such a play requires of at least one of its characters." Garcia describes the character differently -- "a lovable and ingenuously wise goober who is humorously befuddled by the chaos around him."

Apparently, this is Garcia's third performance with Colonial Players. He appeared in plays in 2003 and 2005, before DHS "intervened" during his years as a presidential appointee -- presumably and perhaps understandably opting for their public figures to maintain a one-track mind. The schedule was grueling, Garcia said, requiring five to six weeks of rehearsal before kickoff of the 20-show run.

In other conversations with Garcia, I learned he's a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do (though no longer training) and a member of a bicycling team, which recently had him sprint 30 mph after a 60-mile race.

Who knew?
