Herman Nomination Advances

The Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee yesterday approved by unanimous voice vote the nomination of White House aide Alexis Herman to be labor secretary.

Senate Majority Leader Lott said a vote on Herman by the full Senate "would probably take some time, because there are some issues that have been raised that have to be answered for the senators before they would want to vote on that nomination."

Today's vote was held during a quick meeting of committee members in a room just off the Senate floor.

Lott said the Senate may take up Herman's nomination and former Rep. Douglas (Pete) Peterson's nomination to be ambassador to Vietnam next week.
