Lake Promises Discipline
President Clinton's choice as the next CIA director promised at a confirmation hearing yesterday to discipline agents "when they do wrong" and to fire them when necessary.
In a second day of testimony, Anthony Lake said that in preparing to be director of intelligence, he told his future colleagues at CIA headquarters "that there will be support for them, but when they do wrong, there will be consequences." The director has extraordinary power to fire people, Lake said, and that power "will be exercised if appropriate. People should get fired."
At the same time, Lake said he would like to reward employees who take on tough assignments. "Even if they fail at hard things, if they did it right and they did it honestly, they need to be rewarded for it," he said.
