President Clinton today proposed a $1.8 trillion federal budget for fiscal 2000, a 2.3 percent increase over 1999.

Despite the $39 billion increase, the budget projects a $117 billion surplus next year, with surpluses totaling $2.6 trillion from 1998 through 2009.

In its budget statement, the administration says the era of surpluses would not have been possible without the administration's streamlining and reinventing government efforts.

"It is our progress in reinventing and downsizing government, while improving it, that has enabled us to balance the budget, cut taxes for families and invest properly in key priorities for the future," Vice President Al Gore said.

The budget and supporting documents were posted this morning on the Government Printing Office Web site.
