President Clinton today filled out his national security team for his second term, announcing hs intention to nominate U.N. ambassador Madeleine Albright to be Secretary of State and retiring Republican Senator William Cohen of Maine to head the Defense Department.
The President also said he would nominate National Security Adviser Anthony Lake to be the new CIA director. Sandy Berger, Lake's deputy, will move up into his spot.
Albright would be the first female Secretary of State in U.S. history. "I am deeply honored by your decision," she told Clinton at a White House ceremony.
The selection of Cohen fulfills the President's pledge to try to find slots for Republicans in his second-term Cabinet.
According to a report in the Associated Press, the announcement of the new lineup probably means that CIA Director John Deutch will be leaving the Administration. He had been mentioned as a candidate to replace Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary, but White House aides told AP they no longer expect that to happen.
