DOE Whistleblower Protection

Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary announced yesterday that her department has set up an office to protect whistleblowers against retaliation. The Office of Employee Concerns will try to resolve complaints filed about environmental safety, health and security issues. The office will be headed by William A. Lewis Jr., a lawyer with experience in handling employee disputes, according to a report in The Washington Post.

The department has also proposed to streamline its Contractor Employee Protection Program and start a pilot project to resolve five contractor whistleblower cases. Those cases to be evaluated occurred between Oct. 1, 1977 and April 2, 1992.
