Porn exec on GOP's 'family-friendly' platform: 'Sex is everywhere'

First there was a Republican war on women. Now the GOP has declared war on the all-American porn user.

That's according to an executive with the adult movie company Vivid Entertainment who warned Republicans on Thursday to be less, ahem, "vigorous" in their approach to pornography.

During this week's GOP national convention, delegates approved a party platform that called for officials to "vigorously" enforce pornography laws. "The Internet must be made safe for children," the platform urged.

That didn't sit well with Vivid co-chairman Steven Hirsch, who applauded the Republicans' stance against child pornography but suggested that the party was acting old fashioned and was in danger of sparking a "witch hunt".

"Sex is everywhere in the adult world and this isn't going to change. If anything, it will become more pervasive," Hirsch said in a statement. "The Republicans' call for 'vigorous' enforcement of these laws is a hollow gesture and obvious pandering to ultra-right-wing conservatives."

He also reminded Republicans of a 2009 Harvard study that found relatively high Internet porn subscriptions in traditionally conservative states.

"Conservatives should be careful who they target, since it's likely to be fellow conservatives," Hirsch said. In a close election, could the porn-user lobby help to sway the outcome?
